How to make your skin and hair ‘Season Change Ready’

Change is in the air as we are escalating from the monsoon to the autumn and winters. As you change your wardrobe every season and make changes to your diet, similarly one should make the necessary changes to the skin care routine as well. Severe climate changes have negative impact on the skin and hair, and the changing season these problems aggravate, especially for those with dry skin and rough hair. We bring to you some tricks you could follow and include in your lifestyles to be ‘season change ready’ –

1. Stay Hydrated – First and foremost, no matter what always remember to drink at least two to three litres of water per day, and consume fruits and vegetables that are water based, such as apples, radish and cucumbers. These foods can help curb hunger and boost your water intake, to keep you healthy and hydrated all day.

2.  Moisturising – During the changing weather, the outer layer of skin becomes very dry, therefore, it is important to keep the skin moisturized at all times. Even if one has oily skin, light moisturizing is a must after cleansing to keep the skin soft and supple.

3. Sunscreen is mandatory – Many people believe that autumn skin care doesn’t require sunscreen but little do they know that exposure to the sun can fasten ageing. Therefore, one must use a sunscreen 15 minutes before stepping out in the sun. Also, you can mix plain glycerine with sunscreen as it reduces tanning.

4. Toning and cleansing – Do not wash your face often with soap. Make a daily regime of cleansing and toning. Use an Aloe Vera based toner as it has anti- oxidants properties and keeps your skin moisturized all the day.

5. Environmental Change is one of the big factors causing wrinkle to your hands and feet. If you regularly clean, wash or soak your hands without wearing rubber or latex gloves in hot water or with harsh cleansers, it can dry out your hands causing wrinkles. Sometimes it can also peel the outer layer of your skin which causes fungal infections.

6. Tips and toes – The skin on the surface of your fingers and toes is different from the skin covering the rest of your body. It’s thicker due to constant contact, abrasion, and pressure. Your fingertips and toe tips contain tough connective tissues. If you soak in water long enough, protective oils get washed-out from your skin.

7. Hand care: Dry or wrinkly hands can often be treated with over-the-counter remedies. Using hand repair cream, thick moisturizing, and an old home remedy is always available to spread petroleum jelly on your hands and feet and cover them with cotton gloves overnight. Also use anti-bacterial soaps, Shea or cocoa butter-based products for bathing. It always advisable to wear gloves that protects your hands from becoming dry. Thereby, preventing the occurrence of wrinkles on hands especially when doing any kind of household chores and take tepid showers instead of hot water bath, use good hand and foot creams usually oil based especially in winters.

8. Elaborate skin and hair care regime: Mostly people complain about dry hair and scalp during changing season as it takes way the moisture from your hair and scalp. Less moisture makes the skin flake more easily, leading to dandruff and weakened hair and also causes split ends. Below are the few hair care tips one should opt:

1.  Oil often – This is the best time that you should nourish your hair with lots of oil. Massage with Luke warm coconut oil and cover it with hot towel for few mins. It leaves your hair smooth and shiny.

2.  Avoid streaking, colouring, rebonding, smoothening during winters as it gives your hair more dryness and leads to split ends.

3.  Spa is mandatory – Treat yourself to a hair spa every fortnight. It involves oil massage, steaming and shampooing followed by a deep conditioning mask. It increases scalp blood circulation.

4.  Cover your head while going out – Avoid woollen caps and scarves as it rubs against your hair and leads to breakage; instead go for satin or silk caps or scarves.

5.  Conditioning is necessary – Do not shampoo often but whenever you shampoo your hair make sure you always use mild shampoos and serums during winter and use of ‘leave-in-conditioners’ which will keep the scalp moist for a longer time.
